Katy Williams

Puppeteer

Katy Williams is a Colorado based puppeteer, fabricator, producer, and director.  Katy loves all puppetry, and specializes in life like large scale creatures, suitcase crankies, and front facing shadow puppetry. Her mission is to spread the joy and accessibility of puppetry in the Rocky Mountains, and she has been extremely influential in implementing puppetry in theatres all over Colorado. Katy’s flagship puppet show, The Myth of Pegasus, featured larger than life creatures and shadow puppetry. Katy’s life size, 7 ft long, two puppeteer Pegasus puppet (her first and most beloved creation) represents her brand and has been entertaining children and adults alike since 2014.

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Katy was able to successfully produce two completely Covid safe shadow puppet productions. Both shows sold out immediately and brought needed joy to the Colorado community. October 2020 was “The Shadows of Sleepy Hollow”, an immersive, outdoor, walking adventure featuring four styles of shadow puppets. Then in 2021, Katy produced and directed “The Mitten” with Theatreworks, another fully safe and immersive outdoor shadow experience.

Katy is responsible for starting the Rocky Mountain Puppet Slam in March 2018, successfully producing multiple slams a year (and the first virtual slam in August 2020). Through the slam Katy has helped cultivate a strong and budding community of Colorado puppeteers. She produced and acted as Festival Director for a new children’s festival, Puppet Palooza, which celebrated its third year in Green Mountain Falls in 2022.

In late 2019 Katy founded the Rocky Mountain Puppetry Guild. She serves as President and has been a board member and treasurer of the national organization, Puppeteers of America.

At National Puppetry Festivals Katy is a consistent educator, teaching her “Viewpoints Movement Through Puppetry” workshop. She has also appeared in numerous National Puppet Slams and won best in show in 2023.

Katy has been published and featured in many places such as Under the Puppet Podcast,  The Denver Center, Colorado Public Radio, Colorado Springs Gazette, Broadwayworld.com, Stage Dive Podcast, Westword Magazine, 5280 Magazine, John Moore Theatre Critic, and others. In December 2019 Katy received the coveted and prestigious True West Award for her work spreading puppetry throughout Colorado.

Katy teaches, fabricates, and produces from her home studio in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
