Hypnagogia [VIRTUAL] - A Modern Lilith Folktale and Circus Adventure

  • Elaine Wolf Theatre 350 South Dahlia Street Denver, Colorado, 80246 United States (map)

Hypnagogia

A modern Lilith folktale and circus adventure into the realm of dreams.

VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE

November 7-November 30

This whimsical circus adventure produced by Starry Night Productions features mythology, circus, dance, and a brand new score written by David Rynhart and Cassidy Bacon (played live).

Sylvia has just found out that she is pregnant with a little girl and could not be more thrilled, except for one tiny detail…

the curse that has passed through her maternal line for
generations will surely be passed onto her child.

She is haunted by demons that thrive in the space between sleeping and waking - the hypnagogic state.

Tales passed from her mother and grandmother say that the curse hails from the banished first wife of Adam in the garden of Eden - the baby eating demon, Lilith.

To save her child, Sylvia resolves to face Lilith once and for all, passing through the veil into the realm of fantastical dreams. But as in all journeys, Sylvia is about to learn that this curse is so, so much more.

Written by Colorado playwright Cassidy Bacon, Hypnagogia draws from multicultural folklore, legends of Lilith, and personal family history to tell a deeply human story about inheritance, identity, and hope through the language of circus, dance, and live music.

PROGRAM

Thank you for supporting your Colorado artists!

Hypnagogia began with our fascination with powerful women in folklore, especially those whose independence turned them into monsters in someone else’s telling. In one Jewish legend, Lilith was made from the same clay as Adam, his equal. When she refused to submit to him, she left Eden and became known as a demon. We were drawn to the freedom and strength that still shine through her story.

For playwright Cassidy Bacon, a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, this exploration is also personal. Her experience of inherited fear and anxiety inspired a story about the things we carry across generations. Through circus, dance, and live music, we invite you to meet the shadows with curiosity, find a little magic in the darkness, and consider the strength we discover when we face our fears.

Sylvia, her mother, and her grandmother can glimpse the demon realm during hypnagogia, the shimmering space between waking and sleep. They believe this ability is a curse from Lilith.

The veil between worlds separates reality and the dream world/demon realm. In Act I, the human world lives on your left and the demon realm on your right as we travel through Sylvia’s life, watching inherited trauma and anxiety take shape and echo through the veiled realm. After intermission, we cross fully into the world of demons and dreams with Sylvia as she seeks to break the curse before it reaches her baby.
