WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We’re seeking performers and artists of all disciplines who are curious about creating puppet-based performances from start to finish. This cohort is open to anyone interested in learning the full process—concept development, building, rehearsal, production support, and performance. Prior puppetry experience is not required; curiosity, collaboration, and a desire to learn are key.
WHAT IS THE COHORT?
A large part of this four month residency will be you developing your own original short puppet show with help from professionals. however depending on the shows that are created by other residents (including Katy Williams and Thompson Powers) you have the potential to be cast in those as well.
COHORT DATES
June through September 2026
1-2 (2 hour ish) classes per month
2-4 performance dates per month (dependent on casting for June/July + resident month Aug or Sept)
Rehearsal hours (dependent on casting)
WHAT THE COHORT PROVIDES
Financial Support
$250 flexible stipend per artist intended to support materials and development costs
Funds are not restricted; artists may use existing materials and retain the stipend
$50 guarantee per performance shift plus a split of tips
Training & Classes
Featuring classes from professional Puppeteers Katy Williams, Thompson Powers, along with Immersive and Theatrical Producers, Fronzo Gilkey, and Amber Blais; artists will receive instruction and mentorship in the below:
Research and conceptual development
Writing and dramaturgy
Directing for puppetry
Puppetry techniques (across multiple forms such as hand and rod, double rod, large scale, shadow, glove, tabletop, contact, tandem, etc)
Set, puppet, and object fabrication (puppet design, foam fabrication, pattern making, fur and fabric draping, shadow puppets, ergonomics of puppetry, etc)
Lighting design for non-traditional spaces
Sound design and music integration
Producing and budgeting
Marketing and audience development
Contracting and working with collaborators
Touring and presenting work in non-traditional venues
Documentation and archiving
Performance Opportunities & Compensation
1–2 performance opportunities per month
Opportunity to be cast in professional performances (June–July)
